Disclaimer

Just have to add this little disclaimer: Yes I am moderately conservative. Yes I am registered as a Republican (though I was Independent until now). Yes this blog will have a conservative bent (but will be augmented with facts). Yes I am a Marine but these views on here are in no way endorsed by the Marine Corps nor will I use the fact that I'm a Marine to promote my views. These are strictly the views of a private citizen, Peter Brennan. Thank you and good night.

  2. What's up Pete? glad you started this blog. I said I would read it and, as promised, here I am! And of course, I can't resist the opportunity to post, so here goes:
Re: the whole USA chant situation, I think the issue is not whether the chant of 'USA' on its own is racist (pretty obviously, it isn't) but rather, whether or not the chanting students were using the chant as a discriminatory act, to their own disgrace; i.e., they are perceiving the largely minority team they beat to be un-American because they are of Mexican descent. This is how it becomes racist. I don't know enough about the particular situation to know if the accusation is fair or not, but its the only scenario I can imagine where the chanting students are being read as racist for chanting USA: they consider (in racist fashion) that the opposing team isn't American because of their racial makeup, or because they believe people with Latino heritage shouldn't/can't be American.

Again, there isn't enough back story in the article to really make the case, but I think the issue here is with the attitude of the students, and not with the story writers/media. I can very easily imagine a situation where a group of hateful people start chanting 'USA' as a means of differentiating themselves from a racial group that they have a problem with, no matter what the naturalization situation may be. The main point here, I should finally state, is that chanting USA is not by any means racist in and of itself; Its the highly specific context that matters.

So.. there's my .02 Good on you for getting this blog going, I look forward to seeing what you get up to here!

    Best,

    Jeff

  3. Thanks for the reply big guy. The fact that Mexican-Americans even perceive a chant of ,"USA," as being racist is an indictment of how they really feel. Do they identify as beng more Mexican or more American? They are ridiculous for even having thoughts of racism arise from a chant of "USA." It's pathetic.
